No Boundaries: Impossible is Just a Word"

Everyone, at some point in his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn't fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? What teenage girl hasn't dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships? (There is always a way)  Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in the dungeons of our minds.  This is a sad turn of events in our lives. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures on the way to self-actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of everyday life just barely existing.  But you know what? Life could be so much better if only we learned to aim higher.

I came across a quote that said” It is better to aim high and miss than to aim low and hit” (I think it was a Les Brown book).  The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can't do this. It's too hard. It's too impossible. No one can do this.   However, if everyone thought like that there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment, just think: If it has never been done before you can be the first.   Remember that scientists were baffled when they looked at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, the bumblebee couldn't fly. Fortunately for the bumble bee, no one has told it so. So, fly it does.  On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break through what you deem impossible. If you sit and ponder too long, without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging to an impossible dream.   Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that are ‘impossible for you to do.’ then carve out fifteen minutes a day to work on the thing you know you can do. It can be as simple as adding more water to your diet,  Now look at all the headers and take a meager fifteen minutes every day to put towards accomplishing these goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them off each time you have accomplished any one of them. As you slowly check off your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

Again take fifteen minutes a day to work on those goals, maybe read a chapter of a book, if you say to me you don't have time to read but you watch television for two hours after work I say Bull!! Turn off the TV, I have learned that what you do for eight hours at work is for survival, and any time you spend working on yourself after that is for success, why do you think teachers give homework?  As for the items you wrote under things I could do that is accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’  As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become within reach, And the impossible begins to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a truly unrealistic goal. Only you can determine what is realistic, don't listen to people telling you to give up on your dreams, most people don't want you to do well or at least not to do better than they are. Remember Colonel Sanders opened his first KFC at age 65, so it is never too late to start working on your dream, (Hey! I want you to win).  Those who just dream about a goal without working towards it end up disappointed and disillusioned.  On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that man could go to the moon or fly for that matter. they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.  Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there must be work and discipline. But take note that that 1% must be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one. Don't get me wrong start with the easy ones first to build momentum there is science behind this: Newtons’ First Law of Motion states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion.  Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are pushed out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, “No pain, no gain”? That is as true as it can be.  So dream on, my friend! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and put in the work to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you may find out that the impossible has just become a little more possible.
